Glimmer of Hope is a project that I am starting, to feature local people that make a big difference, but are usually unseen. Although a lot of them prefer to be hidden in the background, it is important to know that a lot that goes around in our community are because of these individuals.  In hopes that these people can encourage and inspire you to live life to it’s fullest by giving back!

I am pleased to present ‘Glimmer of Hope’s’ FIRST featured citizen for November: Joanne Y. I know Joanne through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. However, I see her on countless occasions at multiple meetings, events, groups, you name it she’s there. She has so wonderfully answered some of the questions that are a part of this project and although her last name shall not be released nor have I provided a lovely picture; the answers to this project simply don’t sum up the humility and kindness in Joanne’s heart. Thank you for all you do, thank you for your inspiration and being a prime example of what the hands and feet of God look like-having no excuses to take part.

1. How many voluntary organizations are you affiliated with? What are your roles in these organizations?

The only voluntary organizations I am involved with at the moment are through the Church: St. Vincent de Paul (President and Administrator), Parish Council (Secretary), Pastoral Care (Co-Ordinator), Catholic Women’s League/CWL (Past Secretary), South Particular member (Composed of Presidents from each of the South Conferences and its own Executive), All Roads Lead Home (affiliated with organizations like Inn From The Cold, etc.)

2. Where do you currently work (or) Where did you used to work?

I was an RN last working at the Foothills Hospital, but retired in 2004

3. Do you ever get tired of volunteering?

Some days I am a little overwhelmed when many things happen at once, but mostly I enjoy what I do and regard it as a duty.

4. If you weren’t volunteering what would you be doing?

Aside from volunteering, I belong to a Discussion Group at St. Bonaventure (our 8th year). We are currently studying The Acts of the Apostles through a prepared study format by Jeff Cavins. I also do some baby-sitting for my granchildren and I belong to a bridge group.

5. Do you include your family in these organizations or is it something you do for yourself?

My husband helps me with St. Vincent de Paul, especially hamper deliveries and I sometimes involve my son and son-in-law in these as well at Christmas and for some furniture deliveries.

6. Tell us something fascinating about you, your life, or your loves:

We have 4 children and 6 grandchildren between 10 and 2 years. My husband and I will be celebrating our 50th Wedding Anniversary on November 11.

7. Was there a particular person that guided you towards where you are today? (ie: someone brought you to one of the organizations and now you are a part of it)

I have always volunteered in organizations in Church, School, Band, Scouts, Music, etc. Our parents were always committed and my sister and I have followed suit.

8. What is your source of motivation for helping others?

My motivation is loving people and seeing Christ in all.

If you feel called to serve or are interested in volunteer opportunities, contact your community’s church or google search local volunteer opportunities. A great upcoming chance is CHRISTMAS HAMPERS - we are looking for drivers and volunteers to help assemble the hampers for less fortunate this Christmas.
